The economic principle  I'm exploring is "Institutions are the “rules of the game” that influence choices."
My research question to help me study this economic principle is
"Do people generally feel more confident when wearing makeup?"

This article published by the New York Times  magazine, titled "Using Makeup Shows love for Yourself" demostrates my economic principle by showing how different females respond to why exactly they wear makeup, Is it to lift their self-confidence or is it because they enjoy putting it on?

Firstly, Mally Roncal, a makeup artist and the founder of Mally Beauty, shares her story and states, "I want every woman to know that she is beautiful, irreplaceable and that she blesses this world with her unique talents. I’ve devoted my life to makeup. The implication that it can hurt a woman’s self-esteem is something I take personally." Mally talks about how many males come up to her and ask why makeup is so important to women.

Lot of people this day and age wear makeup to boost their self-esteem, "Once an acquaintance described another woman to me in this way" Mally states, "She wears makeup, so you know what that means – she’s insecure." People often have this misconsiption, that if a women wears makeup it's as if she is not happy with the way god created her.

How is taking pride in your appearance hurting your confidence? How is putting on lip gloss another way of saying that you’re not satisfied with what God gave you? Makeup empowers a woman to present herself in exactly the way she chooses. She is the one deciding, which contributes to HER self-esteem. And as a result of this, the person wearing makeup should be the only person deciding their self-esteem. It is what they hear said about them that makes them unsatisfied with the way they look and therefore, causes them to feel the need to wear makeup.

Secondly, this article published by Buste titled, "7 Ways Social Media Can Affect your Self-Esteem" demostrates my economic principle by showing how Social Media can wreck someone's self-esteem.

As stated above, it is what is said to women that makes them believe they need to wear makeup, it's all based on what they see and hear. Social Media plays a huge role in affecting self-esteem. One of the 7 reasons bustle stated can affect self-esteem was "The Battle for Likes". Believe it or not, for girls, likes are not just a number, rather, they represent a popularity contest. One of the interviewees, Michelle Linker, a daily Instagram user stated, "I feel anxiety over how many likes I get after I post a picture. If I get two likes, I feel like, what’s wrong with me? When we post something that doesn't get a lot of likes, we can feel rejected, which causes our self-worth to take a hit."

Every girl will die to achieve that so called Perfect Life, and it isn't as easy as everyone seems to think. From what they see in ads of perfect women, to what they see in person, they will always want to be better.

In conclusion, it is clear from only a few gathered sources that, yes, Makeup and Social Media do play a role in affecting Self-esteem.

In my next blog post, I will research the question, How do people's comments (in-person & on social media) have an affect on people's behavior?
