Changing fashion through the times.

After the Great Gatsby era, the fashion going into the 1940s changed quite a bit. The way women’s clothing started getting designed in the 1940’s was affected by WWii. Due to that factor, women’s clothing became quite different from the 1930’s and 1920’s because people had to ration everything, but still try to work with what they had according to fashion history, and EDU Fashion.

Heading into the 1940’s, you can still see that three things that are still in style from the 1920’s-1930’s. It’s the boxy/very little hourglass look, sports wear, and skirts/dresses staying around the knee length area. Adult women loved the “business look,” because during WWii, women had to work to pay the bills. Though designers had very little fabric to work with, they made it work, because women went crazy for the look. There where little things that women couldn’t have with their skirts and dresses, but they didn’t mind not having it due to the American spirit. The skirts and dresses had, “few pleats and no trimmings.” So, the dresses and skirts weren’t as fluffy compared to the 1920’s/1930’s style. Though the adult women didn’t mind not having it, they started to become big in accessories. All outfits must be completed. While adult women worked their jobs and their outfits, teenagers had a different type of style in.

Athletic clothing became very popular among teenagers. The boys wore their slacks with a varsity jacket and a nice shirt, while the girls wore an “athletic skirt” that was knee length and a more “feminine varsity jacket.” Then, one main accessory that became huge was shoes, and a specific type of shoe. It was the two tone dance shoe. Everyone knows the white and black shoe that became hue among teenagers during their era and the 1950’s. That shoe was made for dancing, but it started being worn outside of dance classes. Though, the war took most of the goods that America used, it didn’t stop the women from being fashionable throughout the time period.

Now, how will the 1950’s be different from the 1940’s style even though the war is still going on?

  1. VEry nice piece. The only thing I would add would be an explanation of the pleats and trimmings simply because I don't know what they are.
