The  economic principle  I'm exploring is "Institutions are the “rules of the game” that influence choices."
My research question to help me study this economic principle is “How do “influencers” affect average media users?”
This article published by DMU titled “What is the Impact of Social Media influencers” demostrates my economic principle by providing statistics on how much users actually take what influences say into affect.
We can all agree that Social Media has taken over our lives and social networking has been expanding quickly over the globe. It has changed drastically over the years and It will just keep taking over our lives the more we put time into it.
Romy Sassine, the author of this article, talked about how popular influencers have gotten on social media. “It has become very crucial to have influencers discuss the brand experience. This has had a great influence on buyers and especially those who are affected by reviews and comments” People are spending more time online liking posts on Facebook, sharing tweets, posting photos on Instagram etc… “We can no longer imagine a world without Social networks or even how was it before this era?” People of this generation don’t realize how much impact social media has done to our lives, but not just social media it self, rather the people behind it.
A social Influencer is simply a person who can influence other people. “Social influencer marketing is the ability to reach out to a new audience (big or small) through the social influencer platforms from blogs, websites and Social Media profiles.” many brands use social influencers to increase their profit and attract a bigger audience, and in this age, celebrities aren’t the other popular thing happening. It has become very crucial to have influencers discuss the brand experience. “This has had a great influence on buyers and especially those who are affected by reviews and comments.”
At the end of the day, brands should make sure that the consumers are happy, satisfied and are purchasing their products. If the influencer has a big number of followers, it doesn’t mean that he is credible to your brand. “Influencers are competing to work with brands, their focus is to get the next contract rather than building a relationship with their audience.” Therefore I believe influences are rather not helping the society overall, since their main focus is not for the good of the people or the company they’re working for, rather just themselves.
In conclusion, Influencers have been a great tool for marketers influencing buying behaviours and showing great impact. However, they aren’t always credible to the brand, or the customers they are influencing the purchase of products to.
In my next blog post, I will research the question “what role do celebrities play in impacting social media user’s self-esteem?”
